Purpose
to obtain the rest of the energy from the pyruvate and to get the electrons
What happens to the pyruvate
It is oxidized as a CO2 molecule and is removed and a coenzyme is added to form Acetly-CoA
Inputs
2 pyruvate
3 NAD+
FAD
Outputs
1 ATP (per turn)
2 CO2 (per turn)
3 NADH (per turn)
1 FADH2 (per turn)
How many turns is the Krebs cycle
Turns twice for every one glucose molecule
Why it turns twice
Glycolysis breaks down one 6-carbon sugar into two 3-carbon sugar (2 pyruvate)
Each pyruvate in converted into an acetyl-CoA molecule (2-carbon sugar)
One glucose produces 2 acetyl-CoA, so the Krebs cycle must run once for each acetyl-CoA
