Sediment
Small particles that can be transformed into sedimentary rock through cementing and compaction.
Sedimentary Rock
Rock formed from the compaction and cementation of sediment. It can also be eroded back into sediment through weathering.
Weathering
The process that breaks down sedimentary rock into smaller particles, leading to their transport and deposition.
Cementing
The process by which sediments are bound together to form sedimentary rock.
Compaction
The process by which sediments are squeezed together under pressure, contributing to the formation of sedimentary rock.
Metamorphic Rock
Rock that has undergone change due to heat and pressure, often formed from sedimentary rock.
Rock Cycle
The continuous process by which rocks are transformed from one type to another, including sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic forms.
Igneous Rock
Rock formed from the cooling and solidification of magma.
Heat and Pressure
The conditions required for the transformation of sedimentary rock into metamorphic rock.
Deposition
The process by which sediments are laid down or deposited in new locations.
