Mixed Methods Research (MMR)
The integration of quantitative and qualitative data in a single study to provide a deeper understanding.
Types of MMR
Convergent, Explanatory, Embedded, Exploratory, RCT.
Convergent Design
Both quantitative and qualitative data are collected concurrently and then integrated.
Explanatory Sequential Design
Quantitative data is collected first, followed by qualitative data to explain or elaborate on the findings.
Exploratory Sequential Design
Qualitative data is collected first to explore a phenomenon, followed by quantitative data to test theories or hypotheses derived from the findings.
Embedded Design
1 research method (ex, qualitative) is nested or integrated within a larger study using another method (ex, quantitative).
Randomised Controlled Trial (RCT)
A scientific experiment where participants are randomly assigned to either an experimental or control group to test cause-and-effect relationships.
Strength of MMR
Holistic understanding of the findings.
Reduces bias.
Research is more in-depth & generalized.
Weakness of MMR
Requires expertise in both methods.
Time-consuming & Resource heavy.
Complex data integration
Descriptive Analysis (Quantitative)
Used to describe and summarize data (mean, median, mode, percentages).
Inferential Analysis (Quantitative)
Used to test hypotheses and make generalizations about a population based on sample data (T-tests,Correlation, Regression).
Thematic Analysis
A qualitative data analysis method that identifies recurring themes or patterns within textual data.
Content Analysis
A qualitative data analysis method that systematically codes words, phrases, or concepts to quantify their frequency or analyze their meaning.
Grounded Theory
A qualitative data analysis method used to build a theory directly from the collected data, often for under-researched topics.
Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA)
A qualitative data analysis method that explores how individuals make sense of their personal experiences.
Discourse Analysis
A qualitative data analysis method that studies language, power, and meaning.
Narrative Analysis
A qualitative data analysis method that examines how people construct and tell stories about their lives or identities.
Triangulation
A mixed methods analysis strategy that involves using multiple datasets, methods, or theories to confirm, clarify, or cross-check findings, enhancing validity and credibility.
