gravity pulls water downward through spaces in soil and rock near the surface

Percolation

movement of water through the soil deep through layers until it reaches the groundwater

Any body of water above ground (Streams, lakes, rivers, wetlands etc.)

upper surface of ground water below where all spaces are filled with water

porous layer of sand, gravel, or rock lying below the water table
