Synchronous Communication
A communication pattern directly between applications (application-to-application) that can experience issues during sudden traffic spikes.
Asynchronous / Event-based Communication
A decoupled communication pattern where an application sends messages through an intermediary service (such as a queue) to another application, allowing services to scale independently.
Amazon SQS (Simple Queue Service)
A fully managed, serverless AWS queue service used to decouple application components by allowing multiple producers to send messages and multiple consumers to poll and delete them.
SQS Standard Queue
The default SQS queue type offering low latency (<10ms on publish and receive) and virtually unlimited throughput (1 to 10,000s of messages per second), where messages are not guaranteed to be delivered in strict order.
SQS Message Retention Period
The duration messages remain in an SQS queue before expiration, featuring a default retention of 4 days and a maximum configurable limit of 14 days.
Amazon SQS FIFO Queue
A specialized SQS queue enforcing 'First In First Out' ordering, ensuring that messages are received and processed by consumers in the exact order they were sent.
Amazon Kinesis
A fully managed AWS service designed to collect, process, and analyze real-time big data streaming at any scale.
Amazon Kinesis Data Streams
A low-latency streaming service designed to ingest large-scale real-time data streams from hundreds of thousands of disparate sources.
Amazon Data Firehose
An AWS service used to load streaming data from sources like Kinesis Data Streams directly into destination data stores, including Amazon S3, Redshift, and OpenSearch.
Amazon SNS (Simple Notification Service)
A managed publish/subscribe (pub/sub) messaging service that allows publishers to broadcast a single message to a topic, which then fans out to all subscribed endpoints.
SNS Topic
A logical access point and communication channel in SNS that allows up to 12,500,000 subscriptions per topic, with an AWS account limit of 100,000 topics.
SNS Subscribers
Supported endpoints configured to receive messages published to an SNS topic, including Amazon SQS, AWS Lambda, Amazon Data Firehose, HTTP(S) Endpoints, SMS & Mobile Notifications, and Emails.
Amazon MQ
A managed message broker service for open protocols (such as MQTT, AMQP, STOMP, Openwire, and WSS) running on Apache ActiveMQ and RabbitMQ, suited for migrating traditional on-premises applications to AWS without re-architecting.
