Interior Design (RA 10350 / ID Code)
The science and art of planning, specifying, selecting, and organizing the surface finishes and materials including furniture, furnishings, and fixtures and other interior design elements for space allocations to suit, enhance, and meet the intended function, movement, and character of a building's interior.
Professional Interior Designer
A natural person who holds a valid certificate of registration and a valid professional identification card issued by the Board of Interior Design and the Professional Regulation Commission.
IDr
The official appendage title abbreviation adopted for registered/licensed Interior Designers in the Philippines through PIID Resolution No. 20-2007.
Ancillary Permit for Interior Design Works
A required permit form, duly accomplished, signed, and sealed exclusively by a licensed Interior Designer, submitted alongside the notarized application for a Building Permit.
Mezzanine Floor
A floor located between a main floor and its ceiling, whose area shall not exceed 50% of the area above and below it, with a minimum clear ceiling height of 1.80m above and below.
Habitable Room Ceiling Height Standard
Habitable rooms provided with artificial ventilation must have ceiling heights not less than 2.40m (8’−0") measured from finish floor to ceiling; for multi-storey buildings, the first storey minimum is 2.70m (9’−0").
Habitable Room Area Standard
Rooms intended for human habitation must have a minimum area of 6sq.m. (64sq.ft.) with a minimum least dimension of 2.00m (7’−0").
Float Glass
Transparent flat glass manufactured by floating molten glass on a surface of molten tin and annealing it slowly, serving as the successor to polished plate glass without requiring grinding and polishing.
Cathedral Glass
Also known as art glass, stained glass, or opalescent glass, produced in many colors, textures, and patterns, usually 3mm thick and used primarily in decorating leaded glass windows.
Philippine Raw Materials Schedule
The official usage chart from the Department of Trade & Industry classifying indigenous materials such as Bamboo, Abaca (Sinamay/Tinalak), Buri (Rafia), Coconut Coir, Rattan (Palasan), Sea Grass (Pandan), Leather, and Sea Shells (Capiz).

Palasan
A specific variety of Rattan utilized in Philippine raw material craft specifically for furniture making.
Universal Design
An approach to the design of products, services, and environments to be usable by as many people as possible regardless of age, ability, or situation, evolving from barrier-free design concepts.
Equitable Use
The first principle of Universal Design stating that the design must be useful and marketable to people with diverse abilities by providing identical or equivalent means of use.
Lightness (Color Perception)
The perceptual color attribute corresponding to how much light appears to be reflected from a colored surface in relation to nearby surfaces, serving as the most critical attribute for effective visual contrast.
Code of Ethics - Professional Remuneration
Ethical mandate requiring interior designers to charge fair compensation solely through professional fees paid directly by the client, prohibiting any profits, commissions, or discounts from suppliers or contractors.
Code of Ethics - Relation to Architect
Principle directing that an interior designer shall not make architectural changes to plans or specifications without the prior consent of the involved architect, nor make malicious criticisms of the structure.
Schematic Design Phase
The initial design phase during which the Interior Designer develops proposed schematic designs consisting of furniture layout, image boards, and preliminary perspectives based on initial client meetings.
Design Development Phase
The phase in which approved schematic concepts are expanded into detailed drawings, including floor plans, wall elevations, reflected ceiling plans, schedule of window treatments, materials swatch boards, and cabinet details.
PIID Document #5 Fee Schedule Breakdown
Standard payment progress schedule: 10% acceptance fee, 20% schematic design, 35% design development, 20% contract document & coordination, and 15% construction phase.
Reimbursable Expenses (PIID Document #6)
Special project costs (such as CADD plotting, blueprints, long-distance calls, and travel) billed monthly at cost plus a 10% service charge.
International Travel Per Diem (PIID Contract)
Daily allowance charged for international travel: US$200.00/day for the Principal and US$100.00/day for Associates and Staff.
Domestic Travel Per Diem (PIID Contract)
Daily allowance for domestic travel beyond a 50km radius: PHP2,000.00/day for the Principal and PHP1,000.00/day for Associates and Staff.
Republic Act No. 10350
Known as the 'Philippine Interior Design Act of 2012', an act regulating and modernizing the practice of interior design in the Philippines, repealing Republic Act No. 8534.
Professional Regulatory Board of Interior Design
A regulatory board under the PRC composed of a Chairman and two members appointed by the President of the Philippines from recommendees of the PRC and AIPO.
Licensure Examination Passing Grade (RA 10350)
To qualify as having passed the licensure examination for interior designers, a candidate must obtain a weighted general average of 70%.
Penal Clause for Illegal Practice (RA 10350)
Unregistered practice or unauthorized use of design titles carries a fine of not less than Php 300,000.00 up to Php 1,000,000.00 or imprisonment from 6months to 3years, or both.
Civil Liability Warranty Period (RA 10350)
The interior designer assumes full responsibility for contract work for 1year from final acceptance by the client and must repair design/specification defects within 45days of notification.
