Weather
Short-term atmospheric changes that can change rapidly (what is happening outside right now).
Climate
The long-term state of atmospheric conditions that occurs over seasons or longer.
Climate Change
A change in climate identified by changes in properties that persists for an extended period, due to natural variability or as a result of human activity.
Global Warming
Rapid rise in global temperature brought about by the greenhouse effect.
Greenhouse Effect
The warming effect caused when infrared radiation is absorbed by greenhouse gases and re-emitted in all directions by the atmosphere, warming Earth's surface and the lower atmosphere.
Greenhouse Gas (GHG)
Gases in the atmosphere that trap heat, including Carbon Dioxide, Methane, Nitrous Oxide, and Chlorofluorocarbon.
Climate Change Adaptation (CCA)
Actions taken to adapt to climate change impacts, such as conserving water, constructing sea walls or dikes, ensuring food security, relocating to safer ground, and practicing reuse, reduce, recycle.
Climate Change Mitigation (CCM)
Actions taken to reduce climate change drivers, such as replacing incandescent light bulbs with LEDs, unplugging appliances when not in use, and walking or biking to school and work.
Disaster Prevention
The outright avoidance of adverse impacts of hazards and related disasters.
No Build Zones
Designated areas where construction is strictly prohibited for disaster prevention, such as the 3.0-meter easement along waterways under PD 1067.
Disaster Mitigation
The lessening or limitation of the adverse impacts of hazards and related disasters.
Structural / Engineered Measures
Disaster mitigation measures that utilize physical construction and engineering interventions to reduce disaster impacts.
Non-Structural / Non-Engineering Measures
Disaster mitigation measures that do not involve physical construction, such as mangrove reforestation, waste management, and legislation and land use regulation.
Disaster Preparedness
The knowledge and capacities to effectively anticipate, respond to, and recover from the impacts of hazard.
Disaster Response
The provision of emergency services and public assistance during or immediately after a disaster.
Disaster Rehabilitation and Recovery
The restoration of affected communities to their normal level of functioning, alongside the improvement of facilities, livelihood, and living conditions under the Build Back Better principle.
