Carbon dioxide (CO2)
A colourless, odourless gas produced from burning hydrocarbons that is heavier than air, neither burns nor supports combustion, and dissolves in water to form acid (H2CO3).
Carbon monoxide (CO)
A colourless, odourless, toxic gas produced from incomplete combustion.
Carbon (C)
Solid black particles produced from incomplete combustion that deposit on surfaces.
Water vapour (H2O)
Gas formed from the combustion of hydrocarbons that condenses into water droplets.
Sulphur dioxide (SO2)
A colourless, choking gas produced from the combustion of fuel containing sulphur, which dissolves in water forming acid (H2SO3).
Nitric oxide (NO)
A colourless gas produced from the combustion of fuel containing nitrogen, which reacts with oxygen to form nitrogen dioxide.
Nitrogen dioxide (NO2)
A reddish brown gas with a pungent and choking odour that dissolves in water forming nitrous acid (HNO2) and nitric acid (HNO3).
Anhydrous cobalt chloride
An indicator used to test for water vapour condensation, changing color from blue to pink when water drops are formed.
Clear limewater
A test solution that turns turbid (cloudy) when exposed to carbon dioxide (CO2).

Combustion products test apparatus
An experimental setup that cools natural gas combustion products using ice to condense water vapour (detected by anhydrous cobalt chloride turning pink) and passes remaining gas into clear limewater (turning turbid from CO2).
