Who is Mahavira?
* Born as Nataputta Vardhamana. A prince, very unhappy, and searches for a reason for his unhappiness in 599 BCE


* Became interested in a group of ascetics, but waited for his children to grow 
* Never found happiness once he started his search for 7 years 


* Becomes an even more extreme ascetic 
* Stays 1 night to avoid connections, no travel during rain, sweeping road, straining water, eats leftovers, and went naked all to avoid hurting other beings and bugs 
* Allowed himself to be beaten and bitten than hurt others in retaliation 


* Achieved Kevala (Jain enlightenment) after 12.5 years 
* Became Tirthankara, a spiritual conqueror 


* Became Mahavira: a “Great Hero” 
* Died at 72 after a fast and attained Moksha, gained 400,000 followers, many Jains tried to copy his lifestyle
