Small Hotel Size
A hotel classification describing properties with fewer than 100 guestrooms.

Mega Hotel Size

General Manager
The top executive at a hotel, responsible for representing owners' interests and overseeing department operations.
Revenue Center
A hotel division or department that directly generates income by selling goods or services, such as guestrooms or food and beverage.
Support Center
A hotel division or department that generates little to no direct revenue but provides essential operational support, such as housekeeping or engineering.
Front-of-the-House
Functional areas of a hotel where employees maintain direct contact with guests, such as the front desk, concierge, and dining services.
Back-of-the-House
Functional areas of a hotel with minimal guest contact where support operations take place, such as accounting, food production, and housekeeping.
Day Shift
A traditional front office work shift running from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Evening Shift
A traditional front office work shift running from 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.
Night Shift
A traditional front office work shift running from 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.
Guest Cycle
The four-stage framework of hotel-guest interaction consisting of Pre-Arrival, Arrival, Occupancy, and Departure.
Walk-In
A guest who arrives at a hotel seeking accommodations without having made a prior reservation.
House Limit
A maximum credit limit established by a hotel for guest accounts during the occupancy stage.
Voucher
A supporting transaction document detailing financial facts or discounts applied to a guest account.
Guest Folio
A statement of all financial transactions (charges and credits) affecting a guest account during their stay.
Guest History File
A collection of personal and financial guest profile data saved after departure for future marketing and service customization.
Property Management System (PMS)
A centralized software platform used by front office and back office personnel to manage front office applications across reservations, rooms, accounting, and general management modules.

Guaranteed Reservation
A booking agreement that assures the guest the hotel will hold a room, while protecting the hotel against financial loss from no-shows.
Non-Guaranteed Reservation
A booking agreement where the hotel holds a room until a designated cancellation hour, after which the room may be released to other guests.
Central Reservations System (CRS)
A central system maintaining room availability and inventory across multiple affiliated hotel properties.
Global Distribution System (GDS)
A global network providing worldwide reservation distribution, allowing travel agents to book rooms directly into a hotel property management system.
Internet Distribution System (IDS)
All online distribution platforms where hotels market and sell guestrooms, encompassing Online Travel Agents (OTAs) and metasearch engines.
Blocked Rooms
A set of guestrooms reserved or held out of inventory specifically for a group booking.
Booked Rooms
Blocked group rooms that have been individually reserved by specific group members.
Wash Down
The process of reducing the number of blocked group rooms after the cut-off date based on historical pickup trends.
Non-Group Displacement
The turning away of transient or non-group guests due to room inventory committed to group bookings.
Overbooking
The strategy of accepting more reservations than available guestrooms to hedge against no-shows and late cancellations.
No-Show
A guest who makes a room reservation but does not arrive or cancel the reservation before the specified deadline.
Registration Record
A document created or verified during check-in containing personal guest details, agreed room rate, departure date, and settlement method.
Rack Rate
The standard, published price of a hotel guestroom without any discounts or special rates applied.
Room Rate Range
The spectrum of prices between the minimum rate and maximum rate charged for guestrooms.
Hurdle Rate
The minimum room rate set by hotel management below which a room cannot be sold on a given date.
Day Rate
A reduced room rate charged for guestroom usage during daytime hours without an overnight stay.
American Plan
A hotel billing plan where the quoted rate includes accommodation, meals, drinks, and other specified amenities in an all-inclusive price.
European Plan
A hotel billing plan where the room rate covers lodging accommodation only, excluding meals and other charges.
