What does diploid (2n) mean?
An organism/cell with two copies of every chromosome, one inherited from each parent.

A cell containing only one copy of each chromosome.

23 chromosomes.
What is the diploid chromosome number in humans?
46 chromosomes.
What is a gamete?
A mature reproductive cell that carries half the genetic material required for reproduction.
What happens during fertilisation in sexual reproduction?
Male and female haploid gametes fuse to form a diploid zygote.

Why do sexually reproducing organisms produce haploid gametes?
So the diploid chromosome number is restored after fertilisation.
