1st amendment
Protects freedoms of religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition.
2nd amendment
Protects the right to keep and bear arms.
3rd amendment
Prohibits the quartering (housing) of troops in private homes without consent.
4th amendment
protects home owners against unreasonable search and seizure, and prohibits searches unless court ordered.
5th amendment
Protects against self-incrimination and double jeopardy, guarantees a right to court and prohibits private property being taken without compensation.
6th amendment
Protects the right to a speedy, public trial, in the state the crime was committed, with an attorney to defend. Also gives the right to confront witnesses and the evidence placed against them.
7th amendment
You can take your case to federal court (cannot go back once tried)
8th amendment
Prohibits excessive bail/fines and cruel and unusual punishment.
9th amendment
Expresses the fact that rights are not limited to what is included in the constitution.
10th amendment
powers not mentioned by the constitution are passed down to the federal/state government
