What are the seven SI base quantities and their units?
  • Mass: kilogram kg\mathrm{kg}

  • Length: metre m\mathrm{m}

  • Time: second s\mathrm{s}

  • Temperature: kelvin K\mathrm{K}

  • Electric current: ampere A\mathrm{A}

  • Amount of substance: mole mol\mathrm{mol}

  • Luminous intensity: candela cd\mathrm{cd}

What is the principle of dimensional homogeneity?

If a=b+ca=b+c then [a]=[b]=[c][a]=[b]=[c]

3
New cards
What does the notation [q][q] mean?

[q][q] denotes the units (dimensions) of the quantity

4
New cards
What form must the units of any physical quantity take?

Every physical quantity has units of the form [q]=kgα1 mα2 sα3 Kα4 Aα5 molα6 cdα7[q]=\mathrm{kg}^{\alpha_1}\,\mathrm{m}^{\alpha_2}\,\mathrm{s}^{\alpha_3}\,\mathrm{K}^{\alpha_4}\,\mathrm{A}^{\alpha_5}\,\mathrm{mol}^{\alpha_6}\,\mathrm{cd}^{\alpha_7} with α1,…,α7∈R\alpha_1,\dots,\alpha_7\in\mathbb{R} constants.

Why must the argument of exe^{x}, sin⁡x\sin x or ln⁡x\ln x be dimensionless?
Expanding e.g. et=1+t+t22!+⋯e^{t}=1+t+\tfrac{t^{2}}{2!}+\cdots would add terms with units 1, s, s2,…1,\ \mathrm{s},\ \mathrm{s^{2}},\dots, violating dimensional homogeneity. So we need e.g. ecte^{ct} with [c]=s−1[c]=\mathrm{s^{-1}}, making [ct]=1[ct]=1.

What are the dimensions of dydt\dfrac{dy}{dt}, dnydtn\dfrac{d^{n}y}{dt^{n}}, ∫y dt\displaystyle\int y\,dt, ∇\nabla and ∇2\nabla^{2}?
  • [dydt]=[y][t]\left[\frac{dy}{dt}\right]=\frac{[y]}{[t]}

  • [dnydtn]=[y][t]n\left[\frac{d^{n}y}{dt^{n}}\right]=\frac{[y]}{[t]^{n}}

  • [∫y dt]=[y][t]\left[\int y\,dt\right]=[y][t] , [∇]=m−1[\nabla]=\mathrm{m^{-1}}

  • [∇2]=m−2[\nabla^{2}]=\mathrm{m^{-2}}

7
New cards
Why is an angle dimensionless?

θ=sr\theta=\dfrac{s}{r} (arc length over radius), so [θ]=[s][r]=mm=1[\theta]=\dfrac{[s]}{[r]}=\dfrac{\mathrm{m}}{\mathrm{m}}=1

8
New cards
What does it mean for quantities to be dimensionally independent?
Quantities X1,…,XrX_1,\dots,X_r such that none of their dimension functions [Xi][X_i] can be built as a product of powers of the others' dimension functions.
