Describe slave trade in Southern Colonies
Everybody buys tons of slaves, forcing more people to buy slaves to keep up with the competition. People can’t even free slaves since they don’t have a way to survive, live, or go back.
Roger Williams
Was a hardcore Puritan that believed in religious tolerance. He created Rhode Island. He pioneered the belief in the separation of the church and government.
John Winthrop
Governor of Massachusetts. Very Puritan. He was originally a lawyer but lost his job in England due to being Puritan.
Anne Hutchinson
A puritan lady with 14 kids that preached her own interpretation of the bible. She was kicked out of Massachusetts because of this and was murdered by Natives in New York.
Pilgrims, Puritans, Quakers
Pilgrims: Separatists that want to leave the Anglican Religion
Puritans: People that want to “purify” the Anglican Religion
Quakers: Anglicans that don’t believe in needing ministers to communicate with god.

Plantains
A large farm owned by commonly a House of Burgesses member. This farm is run by slaves and functions like a small village. These Plantains grew tobacco.
Role in government of Southern Colonies.
Plantain owners were often house of burgesses members.

Founder of Georgia. He made treaties of peace with the mound builders.

An elected group of people in Virginia that creates laws.
Massachusetts
Created by the Pilgrims/Separatists in 1620
Virginia
Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement was created in 1607 led by John Smith in the goal to make money from gold.
Maryland
Created by Cecilius Calvert in 1634 for the Catholics being oppressed in the New World.
Rhode Island
Created by Roger Williams who was exiled from Massachusetts and bought from the Narragassat natives in 1636
Conneticut
Created in 1636 by Thomas Hooker who disagreed with the Massachusett leaders.
New Jersey
Created in 1664 when King Charles 2 gives a chunk of land to George Carteret and Duke Berkeley. This colony was very diverse due to the Freedom of Religion.
New York
Originally Dutch but was turned into English in 1664.
New Hampshire
Created by John Wheelwright who was exiled from Massachusetts in 1629.
North/South Carolina
North C was created in 1663 by a gift of land to 8 proprietors.
South C was created in 1670 by farmers that created plantations to sell tobacco.
Delaware
Was dutch but turned English in 1664. (also ruled by Wiliam Penn.
Georgia
The last of the colonies that was created by James Oglethorpe in 1732 in hopes to help the people in debt, poor, or in prison in England. This did not work out.
Pennslyvania
William Penn was exiled for being a quaker but got land from king Charles 2 and created Pennsylvania. Freedom of Religion.
Mary Dyer
A Martyr that was exiled from Massachusetts many times and ended up executed.
