OT Intro
“Hi (insert), my name is Gabriela and I’m an Occupational Therapy student, how are you doing today?”
“Are you familiar with OT?”
Occupational therapy helps people do the everyday activities they need and/or want to do. Today I’m going to be conducting 2 tests to check your arm movement and strength to see how that may affect daily tasks.”
Shoulder Horizontal Abduction MMT Patient Explanation
“I’m going to be checking the strength of the muscles that help you move your arm back and away from your body, for example, when reaching your arm back to put it in the sleeve of a jacket. I’m going to have you move your arm into a certain position and from there I’ll apply additional resistance or provide additional support if needed. How does this sound”
Shoulder Horizontal Adduction MMT Patient Explanation
“I’m going to be checking the strength of the muscles that help you bring your arm across the front of your body, for example, when reaching your arm across your body to put on a seatbelt. I’m going to have you move your arm into a certain position and from there I’ll apply additional resistance or provide additional support if needed. How does this sound”
Elbow Flexion MMT Patient Explanation
“I’m going to be checking the strength of the muscles that bend your elbow and this movement is important for tasks such as eating or drinking. I’m going to have you move your arm into a certain position and from there I will either apply additional resistance or provide additional support if needed. How does this sound?”
Elbow Extension MMT Patient Explanation
“I’m going to be checking the strength of the muscles that straighten your elbow and these movements help you with tasks such as pushing yourself up from a chair. I’m going to have you move your arm into a certain position and from there I will either apply additional resistance or provide additional support if needed. How does this sound?”
Shoulder Internal Rotation MMT Patient Explanation
“I’m going to be checking the muscles that help rotate your arm inward towards your body, for example when reaching behind your back to tuck in a shirt. I’m going to have you move your arm into a certain position and from there I will either apply additional resistance or provide additional support if needed. How does this sound?”
Shoulder External Rotation MMT Patient Explanation
“I’m going to be checking the strength of the muscles that rotate your arm outward, away from your body, for example, when putting your arm into a jacket sleeve. I’m going to have you move your arm into a certain position and from there I will either apply additional resistance or provide additional support if needed. How does this sound?”
Shoulder Flexion MMT Patient Explanation
“I’m going to be checking the strength of the muscles that lift your arm straight up in front of you. This movement allows you to perform tasks such as grabbing or putting away an item item on a shelf. I’m going to have you move your arm into a certain position and from there I will either apply additional resistance or provide additional support if needed. How does this sound?”
Shoulder Abduction MMT Patient Explanation
“I’m going to be checking the strength of the muscles that lift your arm out to the side, for example, when lifting your arm to apply deodorant or to put on a shirt. I’m going to have you move your arm into a certain position and from there I will either apply additional resistance or provide additional support if needed. How does this sound?”
Shoulder Extension MMT Patient Explanation
“I’m going to be checking the strength of the muscles that move your arm backward, for example, when reaching behind you to put on a coat. I’m going to have you move your arm into a certain position and from there I will either apply additional resistance or provide additional support if needed. How does this sound?”
Scapular Adduction
“I’m going to be checking the strength of the muscles that pull your shoulder blade back to the center of your back, for example when maintaining good posture while sitting. I’m going to have you move your arm into a certain position and from there I will either apply additional resistance or provide additional support if needed. How does this sound?”
Scapular Depression and Adduction MMT Patient Explanation
“I’m going to be checking the strength of the muscles that pull your shoulder blade down and back to center of your back, for example, when pushing down to get up from a chair. I’m going to have you move your arm into a certain position and from there I will either apply additional resistance or provide additional support if needed. How does this sound?”
Scapular Downward Rotation and Adduction MMT Patient Explanation
“I’m going to be checking the strength of the muscles that pull your shoulder blade back towards your spine and rotate it downwards, for example when reaching behind your back to tuck in a shirt. I’m going to have you move your arm into a certain position and from there I will either apply additional resistance or provide additional support if needed. How does this sound?”
Scapular Upward Rotation and Abduction MMT Patient Explanation
“I’m going to be checking the strength of the muscles that move your shoulder blade forward and rotate it upward so you can lift your arm overhead, for example, when placing an item on a shelf. I’m going to have you move your arm into a certain position and from there I will either apply additional resistance or provide additional support if needed. How does this sound?”
Scapular Elevation MMT Patient Explanation
“I’m going to be checking the strength of the muscles that lift your shoulder blade upward, for example when shrugging your shoulders. I’m going to have you move your arm into a certain position and from there I will either apply additional resistance or provide additional support if needed. How does this sound?”
Elbow Flexion ROM Patient Explanation
“I’m going to be measuring how far you can bend your elbow, which is important for performing tasks such as bringing food or drinks to your mouth. I’ll be moving your arm into position and using this tool known as a goniometer to measure the motion. How does this sound?”
Shoulder Internal Rotation ROM Patient Explanation
“I’m going to be measuring how far your shoulder can rotate inward, which is important for performing tasks such as reaching behind your back to tuck in a shirt. I’ll be moving your arm into position and using this tool known as a goniometer to measure the motion. How does this sound?”
Shoulder External Rotation ROM
“I’m going to be measuring how far your shoulder can rotate outward, which is important for performing tasks such as putting your arm in a jacket sleeve. I’ll be moving your arm into position and using this tool known as a goniometer to measure the motion. How does this sound?”

Shoulder Abduction ROM Patient Explanation
“I’m going to be measuring how far you can lift your arm to the side, which is important when performing tasks such as washing under your arms or applying deodorant. I’ll be moving your arm into position and using this tool known as a goniometer to measure the motion. How does this sound?”
