Aspects of Production
All the details, processes, and elements that contribute to an artwork's creation, existing before, during, and after its physical construction.
Phase 1: The Foundation
The phase of the visual arts ecosystem encompassing the raw materials, tools, and knowledge required before the creation of an artwork can begin.
Media
The physical materials used by an artist, ranging from traditional components like clay, paint, and stone to newer materials like computer technology, light, genetic materials, and trash.
Mixed Media
The practice of combining two or more distinct media types into a single piece of artwork.
Formal Education (in Art)
Art instruction conducted in specified venues such as schools, following a curriculum of skills, history, theory, and criticism (officially added in 1960).
Philippine High School for the Arts (PHSA)
A formal educational institution located in Los Baños designated for gifted scholars in the arts.
Informal Education (in Art)
Art learning in relaxed environments where craft and knowledge are transferred directly through master-apprentice relationships, commonly found in ethnic groups to preserve indigenous craft.
Art Workshops
Short courses managed by art organizations that focus heavily on specific skills, typically held during summer breaks, weekends, or after hours.
Phase 2: The Support System
The networks within the visual arts ecosystem that provide artists with camaraderie, legal and collective protection, and the financial means to continue creating.
Asian Cultural Council (ACC)
An international organization established in 1963 that provides a support system for art and cultural exchanges between the United States and Asia.
ACC Philippine Foundation (ACCPF)
The Manila counterpart of the Asian Cultural Council created in 2000 to increase opportunities for Filipino artists and academics to promote cultural heritage.
Art Patronage
The system in which individuals or groups with financial means support artists through direct purchases or commissions.
Pre-Colonial Patronage
A patronage system based on barter and trade, primarily resulting in earthenware, textiles, metalcraft, and jewelry.
Spanish Colonial Patronage
A funding system driven by the Catholic Church and wealthy individuals, commissioning religious paintings and sculptures for evangelization, as well as genre paintings and portraits.
American Colonial Patronage
A commercial commission system where artists produced illustrations for books, commercials, and marketing paraphernalia.
Gallery Market
The contemporary patronage system where galleries represent artists, collect representational fees, and sell works directly to patrons from exhibitions.
Phase 3: The Validation
The phase of the visual arts ecosystem concerned with evaluating, documenting, and cementing completed artworks into history.
Art Criticism
The discipline of evaluating an artwork based on its artistic merits as well as its historical and cultural importance.
Art Scholarship
The orderly organization, documentation, and authentication of art, including the study of historical and theoretical developments.
Single Achievement Awards
Art awards won through competitions—such as Shell National Students Art Competition, DPC-PLDT, MADE, Vision Petron, and GSIS—which often launch artists' careers.
Career Contribution Awards
Prestigious industry recognitions honoring broader artistic impact, including TOYM, Gawad CCP Para sa Sining, Thirteen Artists Award, and Ateneo Art Awards.
Highest Honors
Lifetime national recognition awards in the Philippines, specifically the Order of National Artists and GAMABA.
