Interphase
The phase of the cell cycle where the cell grows (G1), replicates its DNA (S), and prepares for division (G2).
Meiosis I
The first stage of meiosis, known as reduction division, where homologous chromosomes are separated.
Prophase I
A stage in Meiosis I where diploid cells undergo recombination of genetic material due to crossing over.
Crossing Over
The process during Prophase I where homologous chromosomes exchange genetic material, creating recombinant chromosomes.
Metaphase I
Stage in Meiosis I where recombinant homologous chromosomes align in the center of the cell in two columns.
Anaphase I
Stage in Meiosis I where recombinant homologous chromosomes move away from each other towards opposite poles.
Telophase I
The final stage of Meiosis I where two nuclei form, and each nucleus contains chromosomes made up of sister chromatids.
Cytokinesis
The process where the cell splits into two cells, moving from diploid to haploid after Meiosis I.
Meiosis II
The second stage of meiosis involving two cells that separate non-identical sister chromatids without going through interphase.
Prophase II
Stage in Meiosis II where crossing over does not occur, and the nuclear envelope breaks down.
Metaphase II
Stage in Meiosis II where a single line of X-shaped chromosomes aligned at the cell center indicates recombination.
Anaphase II
Stage in Meiosis II where sister chromatids, which are not identical due to crossing over, move away from each other.
Telophase II
The final stage of Meiosis II resulting in two nuclei in each of the two cells formed, leading to a total of four haploid cells.
