Amnemonic representing the eight essential characteristics of living organisms: Movement, Respiration, Sensitivity, Control, Growth, Reproduction, Excretion, Nutrition.
Movement
An action by an organism causing a change in position or place.
Respiration
A chemical process where energy is released from glucose, producing ATP, carbon dioxide, and water.
Sensitivity
The ability of an organism to detect and respond to stimuli in its surroundings.
Control
The process by which organisms maintain their internal environment within specific limits, also known as homeostasis.
Growth
A permanent increase in size of an organism.
Reproduction
The biological process that leads to the production of more of the same kind of organism.
Excretion
The removal of toxic metabolic waste products from organisms.
Nutrition
The process by which organisms obtain food for energy and essential materials for growth and development.
Photosynthesis
The process by which plants convert sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water into glucose and oxygen.
Aerobic Respiration
Respiration that occurs in the presence of oxygen, producing carbon dioxide, water, and ATP.
Anaerobic Respiration
Respiration that occurs in the absence of oxygen, also releasing energy.
Geotropism
A plant's response to gravity.
Phototropism
A plant's response to light, causing growth towards the light source.
Osmoregulation
The control of internal water levels in an organism.
Thermoregulation
The control of body temperature within an organism.
Asexual Reproduction
A form of reproduction involving one parent that produces an identical offspring through mitosis.
Sexual Reproduction
Reproduction involving the fusion of male and female gametes to produce offspring.
Covalent Bonds
Strong chemical bonds formed when atoms share electrons.
Metabolic Reactions
Chemical reactions that occur within an organism's cells, producing waste products.
