Scientific method order
The sequential steps of the scientific method listed as observation, question, hypnosis, experiment, conclusion, and results.
Units in measurements
Standard units (such as meters or inches) that help provide clarity and accuracy in measurements (e.g., 6ft).
Independent variable
The cause that acts alone in an experiment (e.g., Mariah studying 15 minutes a day to improve math skills).
Dependent variable
The effect that depends on the independent variable (e.g., Mariah's math skills getting better after 3 months).
Closed system
A system type where matter is trapped on Earth, but energy can flow in and out.
Earth's system features
Unique characteristics of Earth's system, including that Earth has lids, a lot of water, oxygen, and an atmosphere.
Mode
The value that appears most frequently in a dataset (e.g., 7 in the set 8,7,9,5,7,2).
Mean
The average of a set of numbers (e.g., for the set 3,4,5,9,2, the mean is 4.6, which rounds up to 5).
Range
The difference between the maximum and minimum values in a set of numbers (e.g., 9−1=8 for the set 4,2,3,6,9,8,1).
Slope of a position vs time graph
The slope feature on a position vs time graph that represents an object's velocity.
CER
A scientific reasoning framework standing for Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning.
Centimeters
The best unit of measurement among seconds, grams, kilometers, and centimeters to use when measuring the length of a table.
Kilograms
The best unit of measurement among centimeters, kilograms, and meters to use when measuring the mass of a dog.
3.5×106
A number written in scientific notation that converts to 3,500,000 in standard form.
625,000 in scientific notation
The number 625,000 expressed in scientific notation as 6.25×105.
