Vocabulary flashcards covering key definitions, principles, and concepts of risk management, workplace safety, sanitation, occupational health standards, and emergency preparedness from the TOU 041 Quiz Bee Reviewer.
Risk
Hazard, danger, peril, or exposure to loss, injury, destruction, or other adverse outcomes, involving uncertainty about future outcomes.
Risk Management
The identification, evaluation, and prioritization of risks, followed by coordinated use of resources to minimize, monitor, and control risk.
Crisis Management
Reacting after a problem occurs instead of planning beforehand, often resulting from poor risk management.
Hierarchy of Controls
A system of hazard controls ranked from most effective to least effective: Elimination, Substitution, Engineering Controls, Administrative Controls, and PPE.
Elimination
The most effective control in the Hierarchy of Controls, which physically removes the hazard.
Substitution
The second control level in the Hierarchy of Controls, which replaces the hazard.
Engineering Controls
Hazard controls designed to isolate people from the hazard.
Administrative Controls
Hazard controls that change the way people work.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
The least effective level in the Hierarchy of Controls, designed to protect the worker directly with protective equipment.
Safety
The preservation and protection of lives, property, and the environment through preventive measures, meaning being free from danger, risk, or injury.
Workplace Safety
The protection of employees from work-related illness and injury through safety policies, plans, programs, and procedures.
Safety Culture
The shared attitudes, beliefs, perceptions, and values that employees hold in relation to safety.
Safety Program
An organized program aimed at minimizing accidents and reducing loss and damage to people and property through hazard elimination, training, regular inspections, and reporting systems.
Occupational Safety and Health Standards
Standards that protect workers from injury, sickness, or death through safe and healthful working conditions.
Republic Act 11058 (RA 11058)
A law that strengthens compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Standards and provides penalties for violations.
Sanitation
Public health conditions involving clean drinking water and adequate treatment and disposal of human excreta and sewage to prevent disease transmission.
Clean
Physically removes dirt, debris, and some germs.
Disinfect
Kills fungi, bacteria, and viruses using chemicals.
Sanitize
Reduces the number of bacteria to a safe level.
Workplace Security
A secure working environment for employees that protects people, data, networks, software, equipment, and company assets.
Emergency Preparedness
Training staff and conducting drills in workplace emergency procedures to ensure employees respond safely during an actual emergency.
Evacuation
A protective action that moves people to a safe assembly area outside or away from danger during events such as fires, chemical spills, or bomb threats.
Sheltering
Moving to the strongest part of the building, away from exterior glass, during emergencies such as a tornado warning.
Shelter-in-Place
Remaining inside a designated protected area when an outside hazard, such as a chemical cloud, makes evacuation unsafe or inappropriate.
Lockdown
A protective action where individuals hide or barricade in place as directed to protect against an act of violence.
