define conformity
a change in beliefs and behaviour to fit in line with a majority. this can be the result of social pressures but can be media influence. conformity is usually non-verbal as we observe others and then alter our behaviour, as there’s a strong desire to comply with standards, rules, and societal norms
define compliance
when we change our behaviour to match the group but do not change our beliefs. compliance is prompted by the wish to fit in and be accepted or liked by a group.
define identification
our behaviour and beliefs are determined by the group we are in, this change is not maintained when we are not in the group
define internalisation
when we fully take on board the beliefs of the group even if we leave, it’s a permanent change. this is created through informational influence, we conform as we believe it’s the right thing to do
define normative influence
we change our beliefs and behaviour to match a group and fit in. we conform as we feel the pressure to be liked or respected by the majority.
define informational influence
we change our beliefs and behaviour because we want to be correct. we look for cues from others in social situations when we are unsure, and we believe they have superior knowledge or judgement

normative influence is associated with compliance, as we change our behaviour to fit in, however this does not necessarily change our personal beliefs.

informational influence is associated with internalisation as we can be influenced to change long term from those we believe are more knowledgeable
