Vocabulary practice flashcards covering summation notation, closed-form summation rules, big operators, empty set conventions, and symmetric power sum equations.
Summation
The discrete analogue of an integral, written as ∑i=abxi, which denotes the sum of a sequence of terms xa+xa+1+⋯+xb using an enlarged capital Greek letter sigma.
Index of Summation
The iteration variable (commonly i, j, or k) that loops through all integer values from the lower limit to the upper limit, inclusive.
Lower Bound (Lower Limit)
The starting value for the index in a summation, designated as a in ∑i=abxi.
Upper Bound (Upper Limit)
The terminating value for the index in a summation, designated as b in ∑i=abxi.
Empty Sum
A summation in which the upper bound is strictly less than the lower bound (b<a), which evaluates by definition to 0, the identity element for addition.
Index Shifting
The process of substituting an index variable and correspondingly shifting the lower and upper bounds to yield an equivalent, more convenient sum (e.g., substituting j=i−1 to convert ∑i=1n(i−1) to ∑j=0n−1j).
Scope of a Summation
The portion of a mathematical expression covered by the summation operator, which extends to the first addition or subtraction symbol not enclosed in parentheses or part of a larger term.
Einstein Summation Convention
A notation convention introduced in theoretical physics where the summation symbol ∑i is omitted entirely when the index ranges over an understood set of values.
Double Sum
A nested summation where one sum appears inside another (acting like two nested loops), aggregating terms over all pairs of values for the two summation indices.
Linearity of Summation
The property that allows constant factors to be factored outside the sum (∑i∈Saxi=a∑i∈Sxi) and additive components to be split into separate sums (∑i∈S(xi+yi)=∑i∈Sxi+∑i∈Syi).
Arithmetic Series Formula
The standard closed-form formula ∑i=1ni=2n(n+1), which computes the sum of the first n integers as n multiplied by the average value 2n+1.
Geometric Series Formula
The closed-form identity ∑i=0nri=1−r1−rn+1 for r=1, which converges to 1−r1 as an infinite sum when ∣r∣<1.
Harmonic Number (Hn)
The sum of the reciprocals of the first n positive integers, expressed as Hn=∑i=1ni1.
Guess but Verify Method
A technique for solving summations where values are tabulated for initial upper bounds to hypothesize a formula, followed by a rigorous proof via induction.
Integral Bounding for Sums
A bounding technique establishing that for any non-decreasing function f(x), the summation is bounded as ∫a−1bf(x)dx≤∑i=abf(i)≤∫ab+1f(x)dx.
Product Notation (∏)
A mathematical notation utilizing an enlarged capital Greek letter pi to represent the product of a sequence of factors, as in n!=∏i=1ni.
Empty Product
A product over an empty index set, which is defined to equal 1, the multiplicative identity element (leading to 0!=1).
Big AND and Big OR Operators
Generalized aggregate logical operators across an index set (⋀x∈SP(x)≡∀x∈S:P(x) and ⋁x∈SP(x)≡∃x∈S:P(x)), which take the identity elements True and False on an empty index set.
Empty Collection Set Operations
Set aggregations evaluated over an empty collection of sets, where the generalized union evaluates to the empty set (∅) and the generalized intersection is undefined due to the lack of an identity element.

System of Symmetric Power Sums
A system of equations consisting of a+b+c=4, a2+b2+c2=10, and a3+b3+c3=22, posing the problem of determining a4+b4+c4.
