Anucleate cells
Cells that do not have a nucleus.
Examples of anucleate cells
Skin cells and lens fibers are examples of anucleate cells.
Function of skin cells' nuclei
Only basal lamina cells have a nucleus; the rest serve as a barrier without needing a nucleus.
Lens fibers
A type of fiber cell that is anucleate.
Red Blood Cells (RBCs)
RBCs are anucleate because they remove their nuclei to optimize oxygen transport.
Nuclear envelope
The outer part of the nucleus that is 50% made up of nuclear pores.
Function of nuclear pores
Allow diffusion for proteins less than 62 kDa and connect to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER).
Nucleoplasmin
A protein composed of pentameres, with each subunit being 33 kDa, totaling 165 kDa.
Functions of nucleoplasmin
Genome stability, transcription regulation, and it enters the nucleus via ATP-dependent receptors on nuclear pores.
Lamin
Intermediate filaments found only in the nucleus, with 3 main types: A, B, and C.
Role of lamin in the nucleus
Interconnects chromatin to form the nuclear skeleton; phosphorylation of lamin B is associated with nuclear dissolution.
Progeria
A disease characterized by precocious aging caused by a defect in the gene coding for lamin A.
Effects of lamin A defect
Deformed nucleus results from the improper farnesyl modification of lamin A in progeria patients.
Lonafarnib
A farnesyl esterase inhibitor used as a treatment for progeria.
