Outline 3 examples of technology advancements and their impact on domestic life

  1. TVs (common to Aus 1960s, and in colour from 1975 forwards) changed the nature of entertainment within families, interests and habits at home

  2. The fridge (common to Aus by 1960s) changed eating and shopping habits, food storage and cooking methods.

  3. The invention of washing machines (mass produced in Aus later 1940s) helped save time and effort, leading to more relaxed domestic roles as machinery laboured.

These various advancements redefined the domestic landscape, allowing women to move into the workforce and pursue greater social independence. This caused controversy, where traditionalists disliked the change to gender roles and integration of women into typically male-dominated fields.
