what is a tissue?
group of similar cells that perform the same function
name of a nerve cell
neuron
primary function of nerve tissue
to recieve rand coduct eletrical and chemical signals to and from parts of the body
where is stratified squamos epithelial tissue located on the body
epidermis of the skin
lines the esophagus (resists friction)
what type of tissue is the stomach lining
simple columnar
what type of tissue lines the trachea
pseudostratified columnar
what type of tissue is the lung tissue/alveolar sacs
simple squamos
what type of tissue is the tubules of the kidney
simple cuboidal
what type of tissue lines the bladder
transitional
what are the types of loose connective tissue
areolar (most widely distributed type → covers organs and tissues)
adipose (body fat → insulates and protects)
reticular (forms internal framework of organs)
what is elastic cartilage
cartilage found in the external ear and the epiglottis that prevents fluids from being swallowed into the trachea
what is adipose tissue
fatty tissue that stores long term energy and cushions vital organs
what is bone
ossified tissue that supports the body and protects vital organs
what are the types of dense connective tissue
irregular → collagen fibers are going different directions
regular → collagen fibers are going the same direction
elastic
what is cartilage
less hard and more flexible connective tissue than bone.
three types:
1. hyaline (most widespread)
2. Elastic (external ear)
3. Fibrocartilage (areas of high pressure → miniscus)
types of connective tissue
loose connective
dense connective
bone
cartilage
blood
dense connective tissue/characteristics
a type of connective tissue that keeps everything togherter. Makes up tendons (muscle to bone) and ligaments (bone to bone)
things that muscle tissue does/characteristics
moves food through dicestive tract
contract
allows you to run
pumps blood
things epithelial tissue does/characteristics
covers bodys external surfaces + lines body cavitities
cells may protect, absorb, secrete, or form a filtering membrane Cells
classified by shape and layers of cells
things connective tissue does/characteristics
most abundant tissue type, a matrix
supports and connects either by structure or action
packages and anchors organs
things nervous tissue does/characteristics
transmits chemicla messages and electricla impusles throughout the body
part of larger sytstem that includes the spinal chord and brain
function of connective tissue
provides protection/supports body and binds body tissues together
function of muscle tissue
contraction, shortening, and produces movement
function of epithelial tissue
covers body, linings, and glandular tissue. Job is protection, absorption, filtration, secretion.
