Hi, Chie. It's nice to finally meet you.
Hi, Paula. It's very nice to meet you too. I've heard a lot about you from my husband.
I've heard about you too.
Could you tell me a little about yourself?
Sure./ I used to work for Yahoo Japan,/ mainly in e-commerce.
I developed training programs/ for businesses /using Yahoo Shopping and Yahoo Auctions.
Yahoo!
I also taught the courses,/ trained instructors, /and worked in sales promotion.
Through that experience / I learned how to identify / what really makes a product or service valuable.
I also learned how to present that value /and structure the message /so that it connects with people.
Later, I became more interested in social issues / and wanted to help solve them.
So I started working on several projects with Japanese government ministries.
But through that experience /I sometimes felt /that people focused too much /on how the projects looked /and on measurable results.
Rather than on whether they were actually solving the problems.
I wanted to get closer to the people / facing these issues / and understand / what was really happening in their lives.
I wanted to experience that reality for myself/ and think about what I could do from there.
As my mother got older, / I started thinking more / about what it really means / to grow old.
Aging became a social issue that felt very real and close to me.
Looking back, / I think I wanted to understand my mother better.
I realized that I didn't really understand what it means to grow older.
I realized that I didn't really understand what it means to grow older.
I didn’t know / how to connect with my aging parent / or how to support her.
So I wanted to talk directly with elderly people / and understand / what they think and feel / about getting older.
That's why I started interviewing elderly people.
Why did you decide to record the interviews and put them on YouTube?
There were two main reasons.
One was to share the real voices and experiences of elderly people with their families and with people of my generation.
Our parents are very close to us, but there’s still a lot we don’t know about them.
We may not really know /how they've lived their lives, /what they've been through, /or what they think and feel now.
Sometimes people tell an interviewer things they don’t usually tell their family.
Through these interviews, I hoped their families could see a side of them they didn’t know before.
I thought these stories could also help people of my generation understand aging and their own parents a little better.
Especially as they begin to think about how to support or care for their aging parents.
I felt that sharing these real experiences was one small way I could help with this social issue.
The other reason was to preserve the person themselves—not just in photographs, but through their voice, expressions, and the way they talked and moved.
I'd heard friends who had lost their parents say that all they had left were photographs.
They could see their parents in pictures, but they could no longer hear their voices or see them talk and move.
That stayed with me, especially as my own mother was getting older.
So I wanted to create a place where family and friends could always come back and see that person again.
They can hear their voice, see their expressions, and see the way they talked and moved—even after they're gone.
I also think these interviews can be meaningful for the elderly people I talk to.
Looking back on their lives can be good for their minds and emotions, and help them see their lives in a new way.
I also hope the interviews can create new connections within the local community.
People who watch the videos may relate to someone's story, feel encouraged, or simply laugh and smile with them.
For me, it's not really about getting a lot of views.
It's about creating something meaningful for the people involved and a place where their lives and memories can remain.
