Producer
An organism that creates its own food, using photosynthesis. They include all plants and algae
Decomposers
Special group of consumers. They gain their energy by feeding on dead or decaying material
What happens during photosynthesis
Energy from the sun is transferred by light to the chlorophyll in the cells of a producer.
Carbon dioxide and water react to produce glucose
Glucose can then be converted into carbohydrates, fats and proteins
Photosynthesis equation
Carbon dioxide + water —> glucose + oxygen
Energy transfers
Consumers eat producers to obtain their energy
When the organism respires, the energy stored in food is transferred in the production of ATP (respiration)
Energy transfer equation
Glucose + oxygen —> carbon dioxide + energy (ATP)
