Ecological footprint
Land and sea area required to support the resource demands and absorb the wastes of a given population
Scale of a footprint
Ecological and carbon footprint. Begins at the scale of one person. Can scale up to a city, region, or country scale (average citizen). What/who is ignored in the footprint?
What about Canada?
Developing fossil fuels is the single biggest source GHGs in Canada. Oil and gas 28%. Transportation 22%. Building 16%. Growth in this sector is responsible for much of our growing footprint and 23% emissions increase between 2005-2019. Transportation is the other big factor-trucking/shipping/flying people and stuff across the huge country
Different sources, different impact
upstram, midstream, and downstream
Upstream
Energy cost to get oil. Additional stuff that sneaks out (eg, methane, natural gas).
Midstream
Getting it to market. Transportation and refining, etc
Downstream
Actual use
Where do upstream emissions come from?
Multiple sources-but flaring of natural gas released by drilling
Canada
Responsible for only 2% of GHG global emissions. But makes up only 0.5% of global population. Per Capita emissions are among the largest in the world
Pick a side, make an argument
Ecological footprints are a useful tool for addressing the climate crisis. OR Ecological footprints are a distraction that protects industry from responsiblity
