What are the different names for an ‘Automotive Computer’?

ECU, CPU, ECM, PCM

2
New cards

What are the 10 Computer System ADVANTAGES?

  1. Less moving parts to wear out.

  2. Compensate for mechanical wear.

  3. Self-Diagnostic.

  4. More precise control of engine operation.

  5. Higher voltage spark (about 30-60K volts)

  6. Lower emissions.

  7. Reduce fuel consumption.

  8. More power from smaller size engine.

  9. To keep up with rapidly advancing technology.

  10. Improved passenger safety.

What is a HUMAN example you would connect to the idea of an Input, Processing, and Output?

The Input would be the Ears and Eyes (Taking in information for the Brain), The Processing would be the Brain (makes decisions based on input data/information), and the Output would be the Hands and Feet (completing an action based on Brains data).

What are the 3 stages of computer system operation?

Input, Processing, and Output.

5
New cards

Input definition:

Input sensors monitor various engine and vehicle operating conditions. Electrical signals are produced to represent these conditions. The signals are then sent to the ECM.

6
New cards

Processing definition:

Compares sensor input signals to data and operation parameters stored in its memory. Determines what action should be taken to operate the vehicle’s control circuits.

7
New cards

Output definition:

The ECM carries out the decisions made in the processing stage. Electrical signals representing these decisions are sent to output devices called actuators. Actuators make physical adjustments to change the operation of the vehicle.

8
New cards

What is a computer signal?

Voltage variations over time. Specific arrangement of pulses or waves used to carry electronic data/information. Measured with an oscilloscope.

9
New cards

What are the two types of computer signals?

  • Digital Signal

  • Analog Signal

10
New cards

Describe a Digital Signal and WHAT does it look like?

ON-OFF signals, like flipping a switch on and off really fast. Produces a square wave.

11
New cards

Describe an Analog Signal and WHAT does it look like?

Gradually changes in strength. Produces a curved wave.

What is a pulse width? (what does it look like?)

Signal frequency. How fast a voltage signal changes over time. Measured in milliseconds. EX: 600 RPM AT IDLE SHORT. EX: 6000 RPM ON FREEWAY LONG.

Description of Pulse Width Modulation | Acroname

13
New cards

What is a signal amplitude? (What does it look like?)

Voltage present in the wave. High-Amplitude signal has more voltage than a Low-Amplitude signal. Most automotive computers only use signal amplitude of 3-6 volts. (How TALL is the signal). 5v for MOST sensors on a car.

Definition of amplitude | PCMag

What is a DUTY CYCLE? (What does it look like?)

Percentage of ON time compared to total cycle time. Measured as a percentage % if a solenoid is sent a 50% DUTY CYCLE, it will be turned ON half the time and OFF half the time.

What is Duty Cycle? | Fluke
