Why did cultural changes occur?

Before ww1 the Kaiser kept stricy control over entertainment but the Weimar constitution allowed free expressions of idea.

Art

Artists went back to old style if paintings to show the harsh realities of life. Avant-garde artists suck as George Grosz, Otto Dix and Jeanne Mammen created art that showed everyday life and criticised current events

Architecture

The Bauhaus style if design and architecture developed. The Bauhaus school was found by Walter Gropius in Weimar 1919

Literature

Germans had over 120 newspaper and magazines to read. The German anti war novel ‘All quiet on the western front’ by Remarque sold half a million copies in three months

Cinema

Film makers favoured darker storylines and thems such as horror and crime.German actress Marlene Dietrich became a worldwide star. The film metropolis became very popular.

Nightlife

Singers could perform vulgar songs about politicians, cabarets became popular for young and gay people to sit around clubs, drinking and watching performances.

Why were some people unhappy about this change?

Many people in the countryside thriught culture should be more traditional and thought the changes showed moral decline which is also know as decadence
