Comprehensive vocabulary review flashcards covering electromagnetic energy, insolation, environmental interactions, heat transfer, and thermal properties of water.
Insolation
Incoming solar radiation; electromagnetic energy from the sun that reaches the Earth. Its intensity depends on angle, duration, and type of surface.
Angle of Insolation
A measure of how high the sun is in the sky, measured from the horizon up to the position of the sun. It is greatest at solar noon and varies by season and latitude due to Earth's spherical shape.
Duration of Insolation
The length of time from sunrise to sunset, or the daylight period, that the sun appears in the sky.
Relationship of Insolation to Temperature
As the angle of insolation and duration of insolation increase, the temperature at Earth's surface increases.
Reflection
An interaction where light bounces off a surface. It increases when the angle of insolation is lower, or when the surface is light in color, smooth, or covered by snow or ice.
Refraction
The bending of sunlight as it passes through a medium, such as air layers of differing optical densities or water, which causes a shift in the perceived position of the sun at sunrise and sunset.
Scattering
The process where sunlight strikes particles and air molecules in the atmosphere and disperses in all directions.
Absorption of Insolation
The taking in of solar energy by surfaces, favored by dark-colored and rough materials. Absorbed energy is subsequently reradiated back into the atmosphere at night as infrared heat waves.
Heat
The transfer of thermal energy from a hotter object to a colder one due to a temperature difference, measured in joules.
Temperature
A measurement of the average kinetic energy of molecules within a substance, measured in degrees Celsius, Fahrenheit, or Kelvin.
Specific Heat
The amount of energy required to raise the temperature of 1gram of a material by 1∘C. Liquid water has a specific heat value of 4.18Joules/gram⋅∘C.
Conduction
The transfer of heat through direct contact between materials.
Convection
The transfer of heat within fluids driven by density differences.
Radiation
The flow of energy in the form of electromagnetic energy, representing the fastest form of energy transfer.
Heat Energy Gained During Melting of Water
The amount of latent heat absorbed by water to undergo melting, equal to 334J/g.
Heat Energy Released During Freezing of Water
The amount of latent heat given off by water during freezing, equal to 334J/g.
Heat Energy Gained During Vaporization of Water
The amount of latent heat absorbed by water during vaporization, equal to 2260J/g.
Heat Energy Released During Condensation of Water
The amount of latent heat given off by water during condensation, equal to 2260J/g.
Density of Water at 3.98∘C
The maximum density of liquid water, which is equal to 1.0g/mL.
Sublimation
The phase transition in which a solid changes directly into a gas without passing through the liquid phase.
Deposition
The phase transition in which a gas changes directly into a solid without passing through the liquid phase.
Visible Spectrum
The portion of the electromagnetic spectrum visible to the human eye, with violet light having a wavelength of 4.0×102nm and red light having a wavelength of 7.0×102nm.
