what are the three parts of the tripartite soul?
logos = truth/reason/rational
eros = love/desire
thumos = spirited / courage
Platos view own the soul
dualist : soul + body are two distinct and separate entities
essential : the soul is the essence of, and immaterial part of a human, temporarily united with the body
immortal : the soul can/will/has existed independently of the body
forms : the soul has come from the realm of the Forms and will return there after the death of the body
Platos view on the soul after death
the soul is released from the body after death and renews its contemplation of the Form of the Good
the soul still has thought and intelligence
being released from constant bodily demands, the soul is free to reach the highest state of contemplation
for Plato, the soul animates the body, giving it life, the soul itself must have life and will continue to do so after bodily death
plato as a result does not fear death
the chariot analogy of the soul
charioteer: logical part, needs to have control of the chariot and horses
white horse: spirited
black horse: appetite/desire
harmony between all needed for a good balanced life
the argument from opposites
Platos attempt to prove the soul is immortal
based on the principle that everything must has an opposite (e.g hot and cold)
1. all things must come from their opposite states (something larger must have something smaller)
2. between every pair of opposite states (small + large) there are two opposite processes (increasing + decreasing)
3. If the two opposite processes did not balance each other out, everything would eventually be in the same state (if increasing did not equal decreasing then everything we be getting smaller and smaller)
since being alive and being dead are opposite states, and dying and coming to life are the two opposite processes between these states, coming to life must balance out dying
therefore, everything that dies must come back to life (so soul goes back to the Forms begins the cycle again/born again)
