Anatomical Position
A standardized body position characterized by standing upright, arms at sides, palms facing forward, head and eyes facing forward, and feet flat on the ground with ankles together.

Supine
A standard healthcare body position where the subject is lying horizontal face up.

Prone
A standard healthcare body position where the subject is lying horizontal face down.
Midsagittal (median) plane
A vertical plane passing longitudinally through the body line that divides the body or organ into equal right and left halves.
Parasagittal plane
A vertical plane passing through the body parallel to the median plane that divides the body or organ into unequal right and left portions.
Frontal (coronal) plane
A vertical plane that passes through the body at right angles to the sagittal plane, dividing the body or organ into anterior (front) and posterior (back) portions.
Transverse plane
A horizontal plane that divides the body or organ into superior (upper) and inferior (lower) portions.

Anterior
Directional term describing a position toward or at the front of the body.

Posterior
Directional term describing a position toward or at the back of the body.

Superior
Directional term describing a structure located closer to the head or upper part of a structure.

Inferior
Directional term describing a structure located away from the head or toward the lower part of a structure.

Medial
Directional term describing a position closer to the midline of the body.

Lateral
Directional term describing a position farther away from the midline of the body.

Proximal
Directional term describing a position nearer to the origin of a structure or attachment of a limb to the trunk.

Distal
Directional term describing a position farther from the origin of a structure or attachment of a limb to the trunk.

Superficial
Directional term describing a structure toward or at the surface of the body.

Deep
Directional term describing a structure located away from the body surface, internal relative to superficial structures.
Cephalic
Anatomical regional term pertaining to the head.
Nuchal
Anatomical regional term pertaining to the neck region.
Axillary
Anatomical regional term pertaining to the armpit.
Brachial
Anatomical regional term pertaining to the arm (upper arm).
Antebrachial
Anatomical regional term pertaining to the forearm.
Carpal
Anatomical regional term pertaining to the wrist.
Acromial
Anatomical regional term pertaining to the shoulder.
Thoracic
Anatomical regional term pertaining to the chest.
Inguinal
Anatomical regional term pertaining to the groin.
Coxal
Anatomical regional term pertaining to the hip.
Femoral
Anatomical regional term pertaining to the thigh.
Patellar
Anatomical regional term pertaining to the front of the knee.
Popliteal
Anatomical regional term pertaining to the back of the knee.
Crural
Anatomical regional term pertaining to the leg.
Calcaneal
Anatomical regional term pertaining to the heel.
Plantar
Anatomical regional term pertaining to the sole of the foot.
Scapular
Anatomical regional term pertaining to the shoulder blade.
Lumbar
Anatomical regional term pertaining to the lower back.
Gluteal
Anatomical regional term pertaining to the buttock.

Abdominal Quadrants
Four divisions of the abdominopelvic cavity consisting of Right upper quadrant (RUQ), Left upper quadrant (LUQ), Right lower quadrant (RLQ), and Left lower quadrant (LLQ).

Thoracic Cavity
Superior portion of the ventral body cavity above the diaphragm, containing the pleural cavities, mediastinum, and pericardial cavity.

Abdominopelvic Cavity
Ventral body cavity located inferior to the diaphragm, divided into an abdominal cavity and a pelvic cavity.
