Quadratic Equation
A second-degree polynomial equation that can be written in standard form as ax2+bx+c=0, where a=0.
Non-Quadratic Equation
An equation in which the highest degree of the variable is not 2 (such as linear or cubic equations).
Extracting Square Roots
A method used to solve quadratic equations of the form x2=c by taking the square root of both sides to obtain x=±c.
Solving Quadratic Equations by Factoring
A technique of solving a quadratic equation by writing ax2+bx+c=0 as a product of linear factors and setting each factor to zero.
Solving Quadratic Equations by Completing the Square
A process where a quadratic expression is manipulated into a perfect square trinomial so that solutions can be found by extracting square roots.
Quadratic Formula
The formula x=2a−b±b2−4ac used to find the solutions of any standard quadratic equation ax2+bx+c=0.
Positive Discriminant
A condition where b2−4ac>0, indicating that the quadratic equation has two real and distinct roots.
Zero Discriminant
A condition where b2−4ac=0, indicating that the quadratic equation has exactly one real root (a repeated real root).
Negative Discriminant
A condition where b2−4ac<0, indicating that the quadratic equation has no real roots (two complex roots).
