Origin
Arises by 8 digitations from the outer surface of the upper 8 ribs midway between their angles and their costal cartilages l 1st one is the largest and arises from 1st and 2nd ribs
Insertion
Medial border of scapula:
1st digitation in the superior angle
2nd and 3rd digitations in the whole length of the medial border
5 digitations in the Inferior angle
Nerve supply
Nerve to serratus anterior (long thoracic nerve C5 6 7)
Actions
protraction of the shoulder
rotation of the scapula so that glenoid cavity looks downwards
fixing the scapula to the chest wall, in cases of pushing against resistance
it pulls the ribs in forced inspiration → scapula is fixed

upper and lower fiber of trapezius and lower five digitations of serreatus anterior
