Vocabulary practice flashcards covering metering types, smart metering infrastructure, standard operating procedures, and safety compliance from the Tata Power-DDL MMG Saransh handbook.
MMG Saransh
A comprehensive operational handbook integrating all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and work instructions for engineers learning and operating within Tata Power-DDL's three-phase metering group.
Energy Meter (Watt-Hour Meter)
An electrical instrument that measures the total electrical energy consumed over time by measuring instantaneous voltage and current, calculating their product, and integrating power over duration.
Basic Current (Ib)
The standard current value in accordance with which the relevant performance of an energy meter is fixed (10A for single-phase meters, 20A for polyphase whole-current meters, and 5A for CT-operated meters).
Maximum Current (Imax)
The highest continuous current at which an energy meter is certified to maintain its specified accuracy level (60A for single-phase meters, 100A for polyphase meters, and 10A for CT-operated meters).
Meter Constant
The relationship between recorded energy consumption and corresponding impulse blinks or disc revolutions (commonly configured as 800imp/kWh, 1600imp/kWh, or 3200imp/kWh).
Maximum Demand Indicator (MDI)
A metering function that calculates and records the consumer's highest average demand in kW or kVA over a rolling 30-minute window, automatically resetting at 00:00 Hrs on the final day of each month.
Smart Meter
An electronic energy meter that records electric parameters (such as energy, voltage, current, and power factor) in near real time and supports automated, bi-directional communication between the consumer and the utility central system.
First Breath
An automated notification transmitted from a smart meter to the central system signalling that it has been newly energized from the electrical mains.
Last Gasp
An automated outage alert transmitted by a smart meter using residual backup power indicating an interruption or complete loss of incoming mains supply.

Talk-Back Seal
A specialized polycarbonate anti-theft seal with precisely calibrated transparency that validates authenticity via an infrared (IR) transceiver, generating an audible 'Genuine Seal' voice response through an electronic microphone.
Power Line Communication (PLC)
A communication method that utilizes existing electrical power distribution lines to transmit data signals and electrical power simultaneously across distinct frequencies.
RF Mesh Communication
A wireless networking architecture used for smart metering where devices relay data to Data Concentrator Units (DCUs) over radio frequencies, utilizing the 865–867MHz free band in India.
Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT)
A 4G/5G-compatible low-power cellular radio technology providing dedicated licensed network channels for smart metering data exchange with reduced risk of traffic interference.
Current Transformer (CT) Metering
An indirect metering arrangement used for electrical loads exceeding 100A, where primary line currents are stepped down to safer secondary levels (100/5A, 200/5A, or 400/5A) to measure energy proportionally.
Availability Based Tariff (ABT)
A frequency-based pricing and scheduling mechanism used across the Indian grid that segments the 24-hour day into 96 fifteen-minute blocks to enforce grid discipline through deviation penalties and incentives.
Moh-Shan
A mandatory 2-minute pause observed by a lineman upon climbing to a safe height on an electrical pole to visually inspect for overhead hazards before dropping a green flag/card to indicate readiness to work.
Permit to Work (PTW)
A formal documented safety clearance authorizing maintenance work on isolated, de-energized electrical distribution apparatus under approved shutdown conditions.
Lockout Tagout (LOTO)
A safety procedure that places physical padlocks and danger warning tags onto isolation devices (such as GO switch handles or ACBs) to prevent accidental re-energization while personnel are working.
Five Steps of Safety Zone Creation
The established protocol required before undertaking shutdown work: Isolation, Testing, Discharging, Earthing & Shorting, and Lockout Tagout (LOTO).
Field Force Automation (FFA / CMM 2.0)
A mobile workforce application utilized by field teams to receive service orders, complete digital Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), perform van audits, capture GPS coordinates, and log installation parameters.
Section 163 Disconnection Notice
A statutory notice issued under Section 163(3) of the Electricity Act, 2003, informing a consumer that electrical supply will be disconnected after 24hours if entry or access to inspect the electricity meter is refused.
Rule 61A Notice
A regulatory compliance notice issued under Rule 61A of the Indian Electricity Rules, 1956, mandating the installation of an Earth Leakage Protective Device (ELCB) for all installations with a load of 5kW and above.
