Carbon Monoxide
An extremely toxic gas produced by all fires due to incomplete combustion of carbon materials.
Carbon Dioxide
A product of complete combustion and an asphyxiate; in large amounts, it causes rapid breathing and insufficient oxygen intake.
Toxic Gases
Gases produced by burning rubber, neoprene, or PVC, often found in electrical cables, conveyor belts, or tires.
Oxygen Deficiency
A hazard in mines because fire consumes large quantities of it; necessitates wearing a breathing apparatus.
How to prevent buildup of explosive gases
Maintain a sufficient and consistent flow of air over the fire area.
Methane
A highly explosive gas with an explosive range of 5 to 15 percent when at least 12.1 percent oxygen is present.
