Describe what makes a general lymph node drawing
reticular connective tissue, capsules, lymphatic vessel, lymphocytes
List the types of lymphatic organs we covered
thymus, spleen, and tonsils
What is the function of the thymus and where is it found?
makes leukocytes known as t cells and it is found sitting in front of the heart
Which type of individual depends more on the thymus? And why?
Children depend more on the thymus than adults. Their lymph nodes are not fully developed and rely on the thymus to produce leukocytes and T cells.
What is the function of the spleen and what is its capsule made of?
be able to remove old erythrocytes and has a capsule made of dense irregular CT
What type of capillary does a spleen have?
discontinuous capillary
True or false: the spleen can heal itself
False: the spleen cannot heal itself, if it ruptures it will lead to internal uncontrolled bleeding. removal of the spleen would be needed.
Where are the tonsils located?
facial region
Explain the connection between lymphatic draining and breast cancer
lymphatic drainage is going to affect our physiology. Meaning if we do not have proper draining of fluids from our tissues, then our blood pressure will be lowered due to an improper flow of fluid back into our blood. When dealing with breast cancer, removal of lymphatic vessels and nodes is needed as the cancer can spread to them.
Removal of lymph nodes in women with breast cancer can have what kind of affect on their BP?
the affected side of the body will have a different blood pressure. You will not be able to drain as much plasma back into the lymphatic vessels and into the bloodstream. Resulting in that side of the body having a different blood pressure.
What is the major swelling caused by parasites called?
elephantiasis
How does elephantiasis affect the body?
the parasite injects proteins into the body as well as worms. The worms live inside lymph nodes, reproducing and causes a blockage in the lymph nodes. This causes inability of movement to vessels leading to inability to drain and resulting in major swelling.
What is the function of a thoracic duct?
It is the region where the lymph will join back with the blood
