Outbreak of the war

• hitler invades Poland on 1st September 1939

• Britain & France declare war on 2nd of September 1939

• Germany agrees to share Poland with USSR

• USA and USSR would later join allied side

The phoney war

• end September 1939 → Poland = conquered by Russia & Germany

→ Hitler was expected to attack Western Europe BUT he actually offered peach on October 6th → was rejected

• Britain & France tried to save Poland but failed

• Germany genral → unwilling to risk attack on France & French thought they were safe behind Maginot lines

→ Britain utilized the pause to strengthen military

• Britain + France hoped for agreement of peach terms or Germany would surrender

• Spring 1940 → it was believed war would never happen

FIRST TWO YEARS IF WAR ERE SUCCESSFUL FOR AXIS → BY 1941 THEY OCCUPIED - NORWAY, BELGIUM, NETHERLANDS, FRANCE, ALGERIA, LIBIA

Blitzkrieg

• Germany strat - quickly break though enemy lines & circle them

• Disorientation NOT destruction

WAS SUCCESSFUL BCS

• it was unexpected - allies believed war would be similar to ww1

• The speed of the attack didn’t leave time for regrouping

• By focusing on weak points - the enemy was overwhelmed
