Primary HIV Infection
The prodrome stage of HIV infection where antibody production takes 2 weeks to 6 months.
Latent Period
The asymptomatic phase of HIV infection following primary infection.
AIDS
Stage of HIV infection characterized by CD4 counts less than 200cells/μL, along with opportunistic infections and cancers.
Opportunistic Infections
Infections occurring during advanced HIV/AIDS, including Tuberculosis, Pneumocystis Jiroveci, Candida (yeast), and Herpes.
Kaposi Sarcoma
A type of malignancy or cancer associated with HIV infection.
2016 CDC Recommendation for HIV Testing
CDC recommendation from 2016 stating that all individuals ages 13 to 64 should be tested for HIV.
HIV Diagnostic Testing Methods
Testing approaches for HIV which include Antibody (Antigen) Tests, CD4 count, and Viral load testing.
HIV Initial Testing Protocol
If an initial HIV test is positive, a follow-up test must be conducted to confirm the result before starting HIV treatment.
Antiretroviral Treatment (ART)
A combination of several classes of antiretroviral medications that work to inhibit viral replication or the binding of HIV to CD4.
Pre Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP)
A preventative treatment strategy used prior to potential HIV exposure.
Post Exposure Treatment
A preventative intervention strategy administered following potential HIV exposure.
