Name all the types of wastes
Hazardous, Chemical, Industrial, Municipal, Agricultural, demolition, mining
What is MSW. How much do americans produce each day per capita
Municipal solid waste. Consists of residual waste produced on a day to day basis. Americans produce 1.4-4.5 kg/cap-day
How much do European countries procude each day per cap? and why?
0.7 kg cap-day due to less space for landfills.
What are ways to deal with MSW?
landfills banned, recycling program, spreading awareness about the issue, better packaging, technology to reuse materials
What are treatement strategies for MSW? (3)
Sanitary landfills, Incineration (burning), composting
Explain sanitary landfills
60% of waste goes there, and they are engineered systems, waste get compacted and buried
Explain Incineration
Burning of waste at high temperatures with O2 but it is volatile
Pro and cons of incineration
Pros: kill bad chemicals, good volume reduction, easy when space is limited
Cons: metals aren’t destroyed, expensive, generate soot, dioxins, furans
Explain Composting
Aerobic biological process whre microorganism decompose organic carbon/wasteinto CO2 into the soil/water
What does resource recovery mean
A way to reduce waste by not generating it in the first place. reduce volume by 1/3
Ways to resource recorvery (2)
manual sorting and comlpex automated process
What is the role of conservation? (3)
keep waste generation low, design for environment, think about life cycle
what is rule 3 of 1993 Enquete Commission
Don't use more resources than nature can handle
what is rule 4 of 1993 Enquete Commission
Don't damage nature faster than it can recover.
what are Hazardous wastes? name the 4 different types
subset of solid waste, require special landfills/prior disposal treatment. Igniteability, corrosivity, toxicity, reactivity
What are superfund sites
abandoned disposal sites that are very dangerous to environment. Passed the point on scoring system
What is PFOA
Perfluorooctanoic acid and it is hazardous
