three reasons why we might treat a client
to eliminate an underlying deficit/problem, to modify a disorder, or to teach compensatory strategies
example of eliminating an underlying deficit/problem
improving motor strength with swallows
example of modifying the disorder
improving pragmatics for someone with autism
example of teaching compensatory strategies
prompts for writing for students with DLD
target behavior
the foundation of any treatment; what you want the client to be able to do; must be specific; helps you determine the four key components of treatment
examples of target behaviors
recognizing 90% of words when screening in a silent room; producing /r/ in the initial position in words
the key components of treatment
treatment approach, context for treatment, treatment strategies, and data collection
the four treatment decisions
context, frequency, instruction, and data
context of treatment
where and with what treatment will occur; what is the “platform” for treatment - consider narratives, conversations, and real life activities like driving and cooking dinner
teaching episode
how you teach a client correct vs. incorrect responses following a prompt; feedback should be precise, consistent, short, and match the theory of the treatment
frequency of treatment
how often and how long treatment is; a.k.a dosage; how frequent are sessions? how long are sessions? how many total sessions?
instruction of treatment
involves either a specific treatment approach or treatment strategies; depends on the target behavior
treatment approach examples
SKILL, SPELL links, minimal pairs, cycles approach, and prelinguistic milieu teaching
treatment strategy examples
semantic mapping, easy onset, chin tucks, and laryngeal elevation; you can pick and choose them from various approaches
data collection of treatment
can be quantitative or qualitative; three types - treatment data, progress monitoring data, and fidelity of treatment data
treatment data
data that is taken in a session; quick; related to a goal but not necessarily in direct alignment with it
progress monitoring data
data that aligns with the treatment goal; taken in regular intervals but not all the time; should be observable
fidelity of treatment data
data taken about the SLP - are you doing what you said you would? involves the key activities and the teaching episode; tells you the order of treatment, length of time of treatment, and the when/how/frequency of the teaching episode implementation
