The root of the nerve exits the pons laterally and is connected to the intracranial ___ ganglion. From the ganglion the three branches (nV1-3) of the nerve run towards the face and oral cavity

ophthalmic nerve

nerve 5(1)

innervates skin of the cranium, from forehead to vertex and the sclera of the eye and cornea. Also has branches to the upper part of the mucosa of the nasal cavity. Sensory only.

maxillary nerve

nerve 5(2)

reaches the dental elements of the upper jaw while other branches reach the overlying skin. Sensory only.

Mandibular nerve

nerve 5(3)

inferior branch enters the mandible to supply all dental elements of the lower jaw and skin overlying the lower jaw, including the chin. The lingual nerve of the nerve innervates the tongue (pain, touch). Motor branches of the mandibular nerve supply the muscles of mastication. Mixed nerve (sensory and motor)
