Zora Neale Hurston

African American writer and folklore scholar who played a key role in the Harlem

Renaissance. Lived in Florida as a child. Worked for the Florida division of the Federal Writers’ Project

(FWP), part of the Works Progress Administration during the New Deal. Toured around Florida and

wrote about turpentine camps. Wrote Their Eyes Were Watching God
