Digital citizenship
The ability to find, access, use and create information effectively; engage with other users and with content in an active, critical, sensitive and ethical manner; and navigate the online and ICT environment safely and responsibly, being aware of one's own rights (UNESCO, 2016).
Intellectual Property (IP)
Creations of the mind, such as inventions; literary and artistic works; designs; and symbols, names, and images used in commerce (WIPO, 2016).
World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)
The global forum for intellectual property services, policy, information, and cooperation.
Infringement
The violation of intellectual property laws or one of the rights granted to creators or owners of patents, trademarks, or copyrighted works.
Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines (RA 8293)
A Philippine law that protects intellectual property rights, allowing rightful creators or owners to benefit morally and materially from their creations, and establishing terms of protection.
Cybercrime Prevention Act (RA 10175)
A Philippine law that protects intellectual property rights in the online and ICT environment alongside RA 8293.
Copyright
A legal term used to describe the rights that creators have over their literary and artistic works, spanning books, music, paintings, sculptures, films, computer programs, databases, advertisements, maps, and technical drawings (WIPO, 2016).
Patent
An exclusive right granted for an invention that provides the patent owner with the right to consent on the invention or how others may use it, in exchange for publishing technical information about it (WIPO, 2016).
Trademark
A distinguished sign of goods or services of one enterprise from those of other enterprises, comparable to ancient craftsman signature marks (WIPO, 2016).
TM vs. ®
TM denotes that the owner of a mark is currently in the process of registration to claim ownership, whereas ® is only used for marks that have officially been granted registration.
Industrial Design
The ornamental or aesthetic aspect of an item consisting of three-dimensional features (shape or surface) or two-dimensional features (patterns, lines, or color), protecting only appearance rather than technical or functional features (WIPO, 2016).
Geographical Indications and Appellations of Origin
Signs used on products possessing qualities, a status, or characteristics that are essentially attributable to that location of origin, generally including the name of the place of origin (WIPO, 2016).
Literary Works (Term of Protection)
Protected during the lifetime of the author plus 50 years after death under RA 8293.
Art (Term of Protection)
Protected for 25 years from the date of creation under RA 8293.
Photographic Work (Term of Protection)
Protected for 50 years from publication under RA 8293.
Audio-Visual Work (Term of Protection)
Protected for 50 years from publication under RA 8293.
Sound Recording (Term of Protection)
Protected for 50 years from the year recording took place under RA 8293.
Broadcast Recording (Term of Protection)
Protected for 20 years from the date of broadcast under RA 8293.
Trademark (Validity Period)
Valid for 10 years and may be renewed for periods of 10 years under RA 8293.
Invention Patent (Validity Period)
Valid for 20 years from the filing date application under RA 8293.
