Enquiry question for coasts physical fieldwork

How effective are coastal management strategies in Swanage Bay

2
New cards

Describe one method we used to collect data (longshore drift)

  • Stand 1m away from where swash stops

  • Throw an apple into the sea, 1 metre back from where waves break

  • Start a timer

  • Wait for the apple to wash up

  • Measure the distance between where the apple ends up and where you are standing

3
New cards

Cons of longshore drift collection method

  • It is hard to repeat as you don't know exactly how far to throw it

  • Apple is not the same as sediment - it is bigger, it floats

4
New cards

Pros of longshore drift collection method

• Eco friendly

• Gives clear numerical data

5
New cards

Sampling technique for longshore drift method

Opportunistic

Describe one method we used to collect data (groyne profile)

  • Start at the groyne closest to the sea wall

  • Measure the height on the post on the north side using a metre stick

  • keep going down the groyne until you have measured 10 posts

  • then repeat and measure the same 10 posts on the south side

  • work out the mean gives clay comparison between North and S

8
New cards

Cons of groyne profile method

  • measurements are not exact as it depends on where you placing me to stick each time

  • only collects 10 posts

9
New cards

Pros of groyne profile method

• gives clear comparison between North and South

• Easy and quick

10
New cards

Sampling technique for groyne profile

Systematic

Why is Swanage Bay an appropriate location for coastal fieldwork

  • It has groynes, sea wall, and beach renourishment

  • Easy to access as it is close to London

  • Sites of coastal management are near each other

13
New cards

Identify a hazard in your geographical fieldwork and how it may be reduced

Sea

  • Don't go in the sea beyond ankle height

  • Do beach and groyne profile at low tide so you don't lose access to beach

14
New cards

Why is a bar chart an appropriate way to present groyne profile data

You can easily see difference in N and S by using different coloured bars

15
New cards

Assess the effectiveness of a line graph to present beach profile data

• It is effective as you can clearly see trends

• Could be improved by doing more repeats

16
New cards

Advantage of secondary research

Over a long period of time, so a wider range of data

17
New cards

Disadvantage of secondary research

  • Out of date

  • Don't know when it was recorded
