Mineral Stability
A condition where lower energy configurations of a rock system are thermodynamically favored over higher energy states.
Gibbs Free Energy (G)
A thermodynamic potential used to assess stability, where the most stable mineral phase possesses the lowest value of formation (ΔGf).
Nucleation
The initial process by which atoms assemble to create a small, stable lattice element or cluster.
Homogeneous Nucleation
The spontaneous formation of a crystal seed directly from a uniform melt without the assistance of pre-existing surfaces.
Heterogeneous Nucleation
The formation of a crystal seed on the surface of a pre-existing solid substance or mineral substrate.
Chemical Bonds
Attractive forces that hold atoms together, encompassing ionic, covalent, metallic, hydrogen, and van der Waals interactions.
Ionic Bonds
Attractive interactions resulting from electrostatic forces between oppositely charged ions.
Covalent Bonds
Interatomic interactions established by the mutual sharing of valence electron pairs.
Metallic Bonds
Cohesive forces characterized by positive atomic cores immersed in a delocalized sea of valence electrons.
Point Defects
Zero-dimensional imperfections within a crystal lattice, such as vacant sites or atomic mislocations.
Solid Solution
The compositional variation observed in minerals across a defined range between fixed end-members.
Phase Diagram
A graphical representation illustrating equilibrium stability fields as a function of temperature and pressure.
Bragg's Law
nλ=2dsin(θ); a relationship determining the angles at which X-rays diffract through crystalline lattice planes.
Twinning
A symmetrical intergrowth of two or more distinct crystal segments of the same mineral species.
Silicate Minerals
Rock-forming compounds primarily constructed from repeating silicon-oxygen tetrahedral units (SiO44−).
Polymorphism
The capacity of a specific chemical substance to crystallize into multiple distinct structural arrangements.
Anion
A negatively charged ion that forms the primary structural and chemical basis for mineral group classification.
Molecular Bonds
Intermolecular forces of attraction, such as dipole-dipole interactions, that hold neutral molecular units together.
Quantum Number
A numerical value that specifies discrete electron properties, governing atomic orbital shapes and energy levels.
