Product Rule
d/dx (f(x)g(x)) = f(x)g’(x) + g(x)f’(x)
Find the derivative of y = (x-7)(2x+1)
f(x) = x-7 g(x) = 2x+1
f’(x) = 1 g’(x) = 2
y’ = (x-7)(2) + (2x+1)(1)
Find the derivative of h(x) = 7x²ex
f(x) = 7x² g(x) = ex
f’(x) = 14x g’(x) = ex
h’(x) = (7x²)(ex) + (ex)(14x)
Quotient Rule
d/dx (f(x)/g(x)) = g(x)f’(x) - f(x)g’(x) / [g(x)]²
*ORDER IS IMPORTANT
Find the derivative of y = x²+x-2 / x³+6
f(x) = x²+x-2 g(x) = x³+6
f’(x) + 2x+1 g’(x) = 3x²
y’ = (x³+6)(2x+1) - (x²+x-2)(3x²) / [x³+6]²
Find the derivative of h(x) = ex+x / 1-x²
f(x) = ex+x g(x) = 1-x²
f’(x) + ex+1 g’(x) = -2x
