Species

A person, a place, a thing, or an idea.
Examples: boy, Billy, the park, school, pen, love, joy, New York
Noun

An action word.
Examples: Jump, run, walk, swim, talk
Verb

A describing word.
Examples: tall, beautiful, nice, yummy, heavy
Adjective

The reason a writer writes something. There are three types: Persuade, inform, entertain.
Author's Purpose

Why something happens.
Clue Words: Because, since, reason, due to, if
Cause

What happens as a result of something else.
Clue Words: so, then, therefore
Effect

To find similarities between two or more things; how they are the same.
Example: Apples and oranges are the same because they are both fruit.
Compare

To find differences between two or more things; how they are different.
Example: Apples and oranges are different because they are different colors.
Contrast

Words that describe how a character or person is on the inside (their personality).
Examples: brave, confident, strong, determined, honest, nice, wise, peaceful, ambitious, helpful, mean, intelligent, hardworking, caring
Character Trait

A statement that is true or can be proven.
Example: Thanksgiving is in November.
Fact

A statement that tells how someone feels, thinks, or believes.
Example: Thanksgiving is the best holiday.
Opinion

What the story is mainly about; the topic.
Main Idea

Putting events from a story in order from beginning, to middle, to end.
Clue words: First, next, then, after that, last, finally
Sequencing

The category of a piece of writing.
Examples: Fiction and non-fiction
Genre

A made-up story with imaginary people, events, and settings. Some parts of the story can be realistic.
Example: "Beauty and the Beast"
Fiction

Writing that is about facts or real events; gives information.
Examples: A news article, an informative article or book, real photographs
Non-Fiction
