Text File
A universally readable and writable file format crucial in computing for programming codes, documentation, configuration files, log files, scripts, and data science.
Interactive Text Editor
A tool used to modify text files, available in both GUI and command line interface (CLI) versions.
Code Editor
An advanced text editor with features like syntax highlighting and auto-completion, enhancing the coding experience.
Integrated Development Environment (IDE)
A comprehensive software suite that consolidates basic code editing, compiling, interpreting, debugging, and version control tools into a single GUI application.
Stream Editor
A command-line tool that uses pattern matching languages (e.g., regular expressions) to search for and replace patterns in text.
Version Control
A system (e.g., Git) optimized for tracking changes in text files over time, facilitating collaboration and code management.
Vendor Lock-In
A situation avoided by using text files, as they can be read and manipulated without needing specific programs or licenses.
Markup
Tags adding information to parts of a text file, allowing specific formatting or identification of sections within the text.
Syntax Highlighting

Command Mode (VI/VIM)
The default state in the VI/VIM text editor where keyboard input is interpreted as commands rather than text.
Insert Mode (VI/VIM)
A state in the VI/VIM text editor where users can input text into the file.
Last Line Mode (VI/VIM)
A mode in the VI/VIM editor accessed by pressing ':' in command mode, used for saving, quitting, and other file operations.
Headless System

A popular, open-source, cross-platform code editor developed by Microsoft, known for its extensibility through plugins.
